Roofing Tile

| Red Clay roof |
Gray Clay roof |
Roofing tiles can be ceramic (e.g., clay fired at a high temperature) or fabricated from cement concrete. Some of the lighter types use fibers (e.g., cellulose) added for strength. The color of a tile may be dispersed throughout, or it may be applied in the form of a coating. Perhaps the most venerable type of roof tile is the Spanish style red barrel tile made from fired clay. The modern version of this tile is sometimes a cement tile with a suitable coating. In either case, the red color is due to the ubiquitous iron oxide material, hematite.
Roofing tiles are available in a wide range of colors; more data on the solar reflectance properties is needed. A starting point for the estimation of the solar reflectance would be to use the reflectance of a paint coating of similar color.
Advantages of tile include fire safety, as they are non-combustible, and durability. Disadvantages include increased weight and cost compared with low-cost asphalt shingle roofs.
Tile roofs often have enhanced air circulation compared to other roofing types because ambient air can circulate below as well as above the tile. (Wood roofs also have provision for air circulation below the roof, to make sure they always remain dry.) This enhanced air circulation helps the roof shed solar heat more readily. The temperature rise figures in the table below are conservative in the sense that we have not attempted to account for this uncertain benefit of enhanced convection. |
Asphalt Shingle Roofs |
Many manufacturers of asphalt shingles have taken great measures to improve the look of shingles, while also increasing the durability and lifespan of their product. Stronger, more natural-looking roofing materials have made asphalt roofing a good, economical choice.

Drywall and Texture
Installed 1/2" drywall with knockdown texture.
What is Drywall? |
Drywall – sometimes called wallboard, plasterboard, or the brand name Sheetrock – is comprised of a core of wet gypsum rock (hydrous calcium sulphate) that is sandwiched between two sheets of heavy paper. When the gypsum core sets and dries, the finished product is rigid and sturdy enough for use as a building material. Drywall is called such because it is a dry alternative to the previously used lath and plaster method of wall construction, where plaster was spread over wood formers while still wet. Drywall is faster, less labor intensive, and cheaper to install than plaster. |
Sizes and Types |
Standard drywall comes in sheets that are four feet wide, with lengths of eight, ten, or twelve feet. Commercial builders often use sheets up to sixteen feet in length. These large sheets make for quicker installations, because they reduce the number of joints (seams) between the sheets that need to be filled and finished. Typically, drywall is 1/2-inch to 5/8-inch thick, but can range between 3/8 to 1-inch thick. Drywall is naturally fire resistant, because of the gypsum in the core. When exposed to heat or flame, the water naturally found locked within the gypsum is released as steam, which slows the accumulation of heat. When installing in moisture-prone areas such as the walls surrounding bathtubs and showers, it is recommended to use water-resistant drywall, also called "greenboard," or concrete backerboard for further water-resistance. |
Installation |
There are three main stages in the installation of drywall, and each stage requires its own special tools. First, the drywall sheet must be cut to accommodate doors, windows, plumbing, and any other kind of opening in the wall. After making these alterations, the drywall is then ready to be affixed to the wall, usually with a special drywall hammer or drywall screw gun – both made to avoid dimpling or otherwise harming the smooth outer surface of the sheet. When installing drywall onto a ceiling, a lift or jack is recommended – drywall is both heavy and cumbersome to attempt to lift alone.
Finally, after the drywall is attached, it is time for taping and filling the joints between each sheet. A trowel with a wide, flat head is used to spread joint compound into the grooves between sheets. Then the trowel is used immediately again to press a special paper tape onto the surface of the compound. The joint compound and tape both work to reinforce the drywall, and hide imperfections. The end result after a good finishing job should be a perfect, smooth surface. Drywall is a fundamental element in construction today, and correct installation is just as important as a solid foundation in the making of any sound and well-built structure. |
